Native Apple M1 silicon support

DeNoise AI is the first of our three Image Quality apps to gain native Apple M1 support, joining Video Enhance AI. By optimizing DeNoise AI for Apple’s integrated “System on a Chip” architecture, we are able to provide Apple M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max users with even faster performance. Everything from app load times, single image editing, and batch processing will be between 20-30% faster.

In our first benchmark test, I compared the time it took to load DeNoise AI v3.4 from a cold boot using both the native M1 and Rosetta versions. As you can see, the native M1 build provides a 59% faster load time when compared to the Rosetta emulation version.

Next, I wanted to compare processing speeds for a resource-intensive task. I opened 10 Sony a7R IV RAW files, each at 60.4-megapixels, and had DeNoise AI run a batch process to apply the RAW model and auto settings for each image. When compared to an equivalent 16” Intel-based MacBook Pro, the 14” MacBook Pro with the M1 Max processor completed the batch process 70% faster and the 13” MacBook Pro with the M1 processor completed the same task 55% faster.

We’re very excited to offer these performance boosts for our Apple M1 users and look forward to bringing the same native M1 support to Sharpen AI and Gigapixel AI in the coming weeks.

Expanded RAW file support

We’ve updated our RAW library to add support for a variety of new camera models from many major manufacturers. Owners of new model cameras such as the Sony a1, Canon EOS R5/R6, the FujiFilm GFX 50S II, GFX 100S, and X-E4 can now open their RAW files directly in DeNoise AI and get exceptional noise reduction. We’ve also updated DeNoise AI to better handle Fuji files when checking if the RAW model is available. Click here to see the full list of new cameras that we now support in DeNoise AI.

AI Engine performance and stability improvements

We’ve made a lot of changes to the front-end and back-end of DeNoise AI, making it run faster and more reliably on both Mac and Windows computers. An update to our AI Engine will benefit all DeNoise AI users by reducing memory usage and providing faster processing performance. On the Mac, we’ve streamlined the installer process to simply dragging the app icon to your Applications folder. We’ve also improved the way we handle EXIF information to support a greater number of tags. And, of course, we’ve squashed a bunch of annoying bugs to make your experience using DeNoise AI much more stable.

It’s nice that you care about niche hardware platforms, would be so great to also add Linux as supported operating system in the future.
Do you have any plans regarding that?

    • Brian Matiash January 13, 2022 at 11:32 am - Reply

I wouldn’t consider Apple’s M1 silicon computers to be niche by any stretch of the imagination. M1 is also a hardware platform whereas Linux is an OS. For now, our focus is to support Windows and macOS. However, I will bring up this feature request with the devs.

Hello Brian. At first thank you and your team for excellent work with these app ! I just wondering why Denoise decudes the pixels of photo quite a lot. For example if I handle the same about 3 megapixel photo. After handling with Ai Sharpening the size of photo is about 4 megapixel but with Denoise below 1 megapixel !! It is quite little for example to many competions.

    • Brian Matiash January 13, 2022 at 11:40 am - Reply

Hi there, Ari. Are you referring to megapixels or megabytes? Neither DeNoise AI or Sharpen AI should resize your image to a different resolution. The file size will change depending on the output format your select, though.

Any idea of when a cleaner work flow will happen for RAW files so we can bring a RAW file directly from LR to DeNoise and then bring the DNG directly back into LR?

    • Brian Matiash December 29, 2021 at 11:29 am - Reply

We are working on improving the LR Plugin functionality so that a DNG can get sent to DeNoise, which would probably be the closest workflow for the RAW model. We are also working to improve the RAW model’s support of DNG files.

In your support link, the release notes for Denoise Ai only list Version 2.01 from April 2020? Strange, it would be interesting to see the latest notes of all subsequent updates.
Disappointed that I never received a reply to my previous inquiries.
    Thank you.
    Happy New Year.

Hello again, Frederic. I am not sure what you are referring to. The Release Notes link at the top of the article points to the post for DeNoise AI v3.4, dated December 20th…

I was interested to see what improvements I might gain over my current version – however after reading all the various comments there appears to be a very common and obvious them … “ I’d like to ask you to contact our Customer Support team “ – hmmm a great shame but maybe not I think

    • Brian Matiash December 28, 2021 at 1:30 pm - Reply

It is true that we ran into some technical issues with this update, but a lot of them have been ironed out and the most effective way to troubleshoot them is to contact our Customer Support team. That’s why I repeated that advice to each user who was having technical issues. I’m not sure why that’d be a cause for concern, Robert.

    Hello, Brian,
As you seem to have changed your installation system, what is the procedure to install 0n a Mac OS?
Once one click on the new version, will it automatically replace the previous version, and will it install in Lightroom and Photoshop automatically replacing the previous version?
Thank you for your urgent reply, before I start messing up my workflow.
    Have a good Christmas.
    Frederic

Hi Frederic. I put together this detailed video that walks through the installation process on a Mac. It should explain everything you need to know.

This was the worst update until now. I can not use it anymore on my Mac Mini M1. The program will open fine. Even with the file linked from Lightroom. But after that I can not click anything in the screen. It does respond very weird. Mac OS 11.4. I use a Wacom tablet with the latest version. I only have this problem with this software. Everything else just works fine on my computer. Don’t bother telling me to contact your customer support team because I did that two days ago and have seen no response yet. Please help me out with this problem.

Did not work on my 2019 27″ iMac i9 running Catalina – just locks up and have to force quit. Not wasting my time with customer support – just wanted to warn people to save them time. I went back to the previous version and it’s fine. Seems like there are some bugs to work out. I’ll give it a try on my new Macbook Pro M1 when it arrives.

    • Brian Matiash December 30, 2021 at 12:38 pm - Reply

Hey there, Sean. We just released v3.4.2 the other day with a number of bug fixes. Do me a favor and install it when you get a chance. It may take care of the issues you’re experiencing.

DeNoise AI upgrade will not start on a Windows 7 OS.

No issues or problems with the download, just when trying to run it, it’s a no go.

Downloaded to be told it does not work with my Apple. Apparently it need a higher spec.

WOW … it processes like a rocket now. I used to have to make a coffee while waiting sometimes … but no need for that now.
I’m not sure if its your update or swapping my i9-based 2018 MBP for an M1Max. Probably a combination of both. Thanks. Looking forward to similar improvements in Sharpen and GigaPixel.

Hi There – Well I’ve had a right performance today downloading the new Denoise A1 3.4.1. upgrade. Completely knocked out my system and if it wasn’t for the help from a friend who is a lot more IT than me, I would never have been able to sort it out.

The worst upgrade experience I’ve had since using TOPAZ. Fortunately I’m back up and running but not convinced its all stable.
    I’m using BIG SUR / PSE 2020 / My IMAC is Retina 5K 27inch 2019 – had nil problems prior to 3.4.1.

    Any feedback would be appreciated

    Kind regards

Is there anywhere, besides YouTube, to take classes for the Topaz products? I love Topaz but the technology has really passed me by. I am one of those people who needs to read it, see it done, do it myself, obviously get stuck, then have a person I can question & show me what I have done wrong.
    I get so frustrated!!!
I was fairly proficient when I started using Topaz products many years ago, but as I mentioned earlier, I feel like I am totally lost now.
    Thank you

I just upgraded DeNoise to version 3.4.0 on an M1 Mac and now when I save the file the image is blank (other than a small corner of a partial image). Everything worked fine before upgrading. Is this a known bug? What can I do to solve it?

If you don’t have an Apple M1 chipset is there need to upgrade from DeNoise 3.3 to 3.4?

    • Brian Matiash December 22, 2021 at 12:19 pm - Reply

Great question, Keith. There are several important improvements to the AI Engine that make the models run faster and require less memory, as well as a bunch of bug fixes and improved RAW file support. If those items are important to you, then upgrading may be worth it.
